Before Intravenous Anesthesia Sedation

Home Instructions Before Oral Surgery

Please follow these instructions to prepare for oral surgery with IV Sedation.

  • You may not have anything to eat or drink (including water) for eight hours prior to the appointment.
  • No smoking for at least 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, cut down or stop smoking as soon as possible prior to the day of surgery.
  • A responsible adult must accompany the patient to the office, remain in the office during the procedure, and drive the patient home.
  • The patient should not drive a vehicle or operate machinery for 24 hours following anesthesia.
  • Please wear loose-fitting clothing with sleeves that can be rolled up past the elbow, and low-heeled shoes.
  • Contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures must be removed during surgery.
  • Do not wear lipstick, excessive makeup, or nail polish on the day of surgery.
  • If you have an illness such as a cold, sore throat, stomach or upset bowels, please notify the office.
  • If you take routine oral medications, please check with Dr. Laverdiere Beck or Dr. Meehan prior to your surgical date for instructions.

Food Selections Post Surgery

Some foods will irritate your mouth. Try to avoid hot, salty, spicy, rough or coarse foods. The foods listed below will be easier to eat and less irritating to your mouth should it become sore. As you mouth heals, you can add some of your favorite foods until you return to your normal diet.

Food to AVOID: Acidic, salty, spicy, coarsely textured

  • Acidic: Citrus juices and fruits, tomatoes, carbonated beverages
  • Salted: Olives, pickles, Worcestershire sauce
  • Coursely Textured: Raw vegetables, toast, hard bread, crackers, popcorn

Food to CHOOSE: Cold, soft, nonacidic, unsalted, bland

  • Gravies, sauces on meats and cooled vegetables, macaroni and cheese, stews, casseroles, simmered foods
  • Soups, scrambled or poached eggs, creamy cereals, potatoes, rice, and pasta
  • Fruit drinks, nectars, peach, pear, apricot, and apple juice
  • Bananas, canned pears, peaches, food pureed or blended, puddings 
  • Sherbets, ricotta cheese, milkshakes, gelatins, popsicles, water, lukewarm broth
